What is synthetic oil?

Simply put, synthetic oil is similar to conventional motor oil in that it’s made from the same stuff, but better. Conventional motor oil, which is what has been used for many years in most vehicles, is directly derived from crude oil and works to lubricate the engine and prevent overheating. Synthetic motor oil is derived from conventional motor oil but with added refinement and other things that make it a higher quality product.

Because of the nature of synthetic motor oil, it should cover your vehicle for about 10,000 miles. Conventional motor oil is recommended to be changed every 5,000-7,500 miles, depending on the climate and road conditions you’re driving in (more extreme temperatures and more city miles with stop-and-go traffic will mean more frequent oil changes are needed). AAA recommends synthetic motor oil for your vehicle because it will save you money in the long run. According to their study, not only does it perform 47 percent better than conventional, but it also saves drivers about $64 a year in oil changes since you’ll need them less frequently.

While it’s totally up to you which you’d rather choose, synthetic oil seems to be the clear winner in this battle. The more refined product coupled with the longer lifespan is just too hard to compete with. Interested to learn more? Get in touch with the team here at McDaniels Porsche today!
